Sailing in Corsica

Corsica is quite simply a superb sailing destination. We are based there at Saint Florent, so completely unbiased! It can be windy and the prevailing direction is W and NW. Since the west coast is by far the more attractive of the two, this can be a bit of a problem. In the event of a big Mistral it is a major issue!  In reasonable summer weather there are innumerable safe anchorages, although it may be difficult to avoid a bit of a roll at times.

As well as fine anchorages, Corsica has a number of beautiful small towns starting with Saint Florent. Calvi, Ajaccio, Bonifacio, and Bastia are all right on the coast and wonderful places to visit. A quick glance at the map below gives a clear idea of the density of places to spend the night.

Absolutely delightful town that reminds you of nearby Tuscany. Comfortable friendly marina that is often full at any time and for sure book well ahead in High Season. One of our favourites. The local Patrimonio wines are an additional attraction. Don't miss.

A small harbour that is much in demand. Mainly focusses on small motorboats. You cannot book in advance - first come, first served. Expensive for what it is. If in doubt, head for the anchorage at Menasina 10 minutes away or use the buoys just outside the harbour entrance.

We ran in rather than face very stormy weather at anchor. Has all the usual modern marina facilities, but the on-site chandlery has closed. Very close to the town centre. Do visit the market if it is open. The local produce there is of the highest quality, particularly the charcuterie and fruit & Veg. Use www.resaportcorses.com to make on-line booking.

Disliked by all reviewers that we have found. Our comments about the pleasures of the town market are however valid here too.

Moderately well equipped modern marina Access is tight and with a strong Mistral might be impractical. Town is below average for Corsica, with limited food shopping. Run of the mill restaurants line the harbour... all pretty much at the same high price.

Mainly aimed at small motor yachts, there is only one spot for a yacht with a draft greater than 1m50. Use the nearby buoy field for €25

This is a truly stunning place for cruisers to visit. The marina is not large and in high season, getting a berth is a problem. Totally protected at the head of an inlet in the spectacular chalk cliffs, the quay abounds with life and restaurants of doubtful quality and highish prices. Excellent ice cream parlours too. The walled old citadel town may also be full of over-priced restaurants, but the views are so stunning that we rather forget the rest. Warmly recommended.
